This area is blessed with mountains, hills, rivers and large streams that nature itself has blessed. The block panchayat, which is spread on both banks of the Chaliyar river, which originates from the Nilambur forests, has an area of 257.12 sq. km. Out of the 8 gram panchayats under the block panchayat, Urngattiri and the smaller Urngattiri are the largest in area. The hills and mountains, forests full of wild animals, and scheduled tribe colonies, which are the foothills of the Western Ghats, are the specialties of Urngattiri Gram Panchayat. In addition, Vendekampoyil. Areas like Cheekannipala, Odakayam, Chekkunnu (Shaikunnu) are naturally beautiful and have tourism development potential.
An ancient rich culture has been found in Vilakkuparamba Pandalangadi in Oorngattiri grama panchayat. Ancient temple ruins and stone inscriptions indicate this. It is said that when these people left, they deposited immense wealth in a well and the well is still there covered with a big rock. This is why the old people say that this area got the name Kinaradappan. The centuries-old Thazathangadi church in Areekode grama panchayat and the Thrikkalayur Shiva temple still stand proudly. The Puthiyara Kovilakam, which was located in Irivetti in Kavanur under the rule of the Kozhikode Zamorin dynasty, is a reminder of the dynasty. One of the headquarters of the Malabar Special Police, specially formed by the British to suppress the Khilafat Uprising of 1921, still stands in Areek, bringing back memories of the past.
